Since monkey smallpox began to spread outside Africa, doubts have arisen about the suitability of the name. WHO is in charge of changing the names and promised to study the issue. Meanwhile, the scientific community decided to rename the virus variants for 1 and 2 instead of the Congolese basin and West Africa. The name of the disease has remained the monkey virgo and the virus that causes it, Orthopoxvirus monkeypox.
The WHO has now decided to call the disease in English to Mpox, and it is still studying how to call in other languages.
