Digital Grammar Checker

Digital Equipment Corporation has published the first computer assisted correction software VAX Grammar Cheker. It allows to correct texts written in English.

They say that by correcting a document or text, it is able to analyze the syntactic structure of sentences and identify the grammatical functions and relationships of the words that form the phrase. Therefore, this is not only compared to a previously saved dictionary.

Since the computer can be a tool to support machine translation, many efforts have been made in recent years in this field: natural language study, spell checkers, etc.

Although the results obtained so far have been quite scarce (most programs tried to translate them literally, obtaining in many cases very curious phrases), they should be considered as a first step and serve as a basis for the following essays or studies.

This new program seems to go beyond the spell checker and detects and fixes syntax or punctuation errors, improper use of uppercase and spelling errors.
