Twenty-five years have passed since the creation of the Elhuyar group and I say that it was not yet legalized as an association. Then the Basqueurs who were at the School of Engineers of San Sebastian began to meet weekly because they wanted to work their subjects in Basque. The meeting place was the “Círculo San Ignacio” of the Jesuits of San Marcial street of Donostia and on Saturday afternoon, the day of the ordinary meeting.
The meeting on Saturday was not expressly called, as the call was always made. But not attending the meeting could be dangerous. And it is that the attendees, unanimously, decided what work touched those who did not attend.
The initial objective was to work in Basque on the topics learned in Spanish in engineering and for this purpose some textbooks were prepared. Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, etc. topics discussed at the beginning of the group. The aim was to normalize Basque in the field of science and technology and to do this, terminology was worked. Gathering what had already been published in these subjects in Basque and adapting it to the first steps taken by the Basque batua was an essential point.
The magazine “Elhuyar”, which began to be published later, was edited as a branch of this association. It is to thank the collaboration of the Real Sociedad Bascongada de Amigos del País to the Elhuyar group at that time under the presidency of Mr. Alvaro del Valle Lersundi.
Brothers Fausto Fermin and Juan José Elhuyar, in the laboratory of the Real Seminario de la Real Sociedad Bascongada de Amigos del País, called the magazine “Elhuyar” wolfram because they isolated the chemical element for the first time in the world.
As one of the main contributions of Euskal Herria in the field of science and technology, in addition to the magazine and the magazine, the group, and then the associations, since then have that name.
