As we age the key is in a gene
The blindness of old age is often due to the degeneration of the macula, caused by an almost banal mutation.
Three groups of American researchers, each for their part, have found that people who have a small mutation of the gene encoding the CFH protein (a complement to their Factor H complement) are far more likely to undergo macular degeneration in old age, leading them to lose sight and become blind.
The macula is a yellowish oval area located at the back and center of the retina, necessary for its correct visualization. As age progresses, genetics and everyday habits can increase this area and destroy visual cells. To avoid blindness it is necessary to maintain healthy habits and detect early mutation of the mentioned gene, anti-mal treatments
