Although the population of the pandas has increased, the state of their habitat has worsened, according to a new study. In 2016 the International Organization for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) removed panda from the list of threatened species and included it in the list of vulnerable species. This decision was due to the increase in population: In the early 2000s, 1,596 adult specimens were recorded in the study conducted by the Chinese government and 1,864 in the study conducted between 2011 and 2014.

Now, a study by Chinese and American researchers with satellite data concludes that the pandas habitat is in worse condition than when it was included in the list of threatened panda species in 1888. The problem they have encountered is the fragmentation caused mainly by roads. The researchers recognize that the Chinese government has made a great effort and that thanks to it pandas are better, but they emphasize that the number of roads has increased a lot. According to these researchers, pandas came out too quickly from the list of threatened species. On the other hand, it is emphasized that it will be key for the conservation of the panda the creation of corridors that connect the habitats of the pandas.
