In most European territories it has been using lipoic acid for decades as a medicine against diabetes and nervous system diseases. Now, however, Dr. Ishwarial Jialal, who works at the Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, finds that it is antioxidant. After eight weeks of a diet rich in lipoic acid for about thirty healthy people, after analyzing blood and urine, he has observed that the body's proteins oxidize less, much less than vitamin C (and we know that vitamin C is a good antioxidant).
This discovery can have an application in gerontology, since the oxidation of proteins is the main cause of aging and heart disease. Lipoic acid is derived from vitamin F and is found mainly in vegetable oils; sunflower oil and olive oil.
