The European Food Information Council (EUFIC) has considered proven the benefits of agricultural organic products and activities in a report that collects scientific research on these products and activities. In the same report, it has also realized the perception of consumers and that they see their organic products with good eyes, although some of the reasons they give for it are not based on scientific evidence.
An example of this is the perception of the nutritional value of organic foods. According to EUFIC, most organic food consumers consider that organic products are nutritionally richer than conventional ones. However, he warns that the investigations that have been carried out cannot be concluded.
However, its impact on the environment is more favorable to organic products and activities than to conventional ones. For example, in organic production, the soil loses less nitrates and phosphates and less greenhouse gases are emitted. However, biodiversity and animal welfare have not been able to have a clear impact, and the same happens with the efficiency in the use of resources or their sensory characteristics.
As for safety, EUFIC stressed that organic foods are as safe as conventional foods and that those separated by the corresponding label have the full guarantee. It should be noted that consumers of organic foods consume on average more fruit and vegetables than the rest.
