A group of researchers from the University of Indiana have pointed to the chronological evolution of photosynthesis. It is assumed that photosynthesis began with bacteria, but it is not clear which were the first to produce oxygen or not produce oxygen. According to Indiana researchers, oxygen-free bacteria, greens and purples are the oldest. Later heliobacteria were developed that do not produce oxygen, ancestors of cyanobacteria. Cyanobacteria do produce oxygen. From cyanobacteria chloroplasts of algae and green plants were formed.
