The courts force the Dutch government to reduce its CO2 emissions by 25% by 2020. The Urgenda Foundation and 900 neighbors questioned the government in 2015 for failing to comply with the signed agreements and the court gives them reason. This is just one example of the issues that are lately being raised to companies and governments of fossil fuels for climate change, similar to those that had been raised in their day to tobacco companies.
According to the judges, the Government is responsible for protecting the population from harmful industrial activities, but the measures taken so far to reduce emissions are insufficient. They have been accused of endangering the lives of this generation and its descendants.
The IPCC presented the new report on climate change last day before the resolution. According to the report, the planet will exceed 1.5°C of global warming by 2030-2052, increasing the risk of extreme droughts, floods and food shortages for millions of people. Thus, the report notes that governments around the world should “make rapid, far-reaching and never change” in all areas of society.
