Read the recommendations of Jose Felix Rojas and the Astronomical Society of Bizkaia on space.
Jose Felix Rojas is a member of the Astronomy Association of Bizkaia, a research group on planetary atmospheres within the UPV. We asked him to recommend some outreach books and he answered us perfectly. In fact, he has requested his opinion from the entire research team, so it is recommended to all its members.
In the disclosure section, the group has made four recommendations. Two classic books and two less known. The first classic is The Universe by writer Isaac Asimov, which describes the basic knowledge of astronomy and the historical path to achieve it. The second classic is the book Cosmos by astronomer Carl Sagan, which he wrote after the completion of his television series Cosmos to be a complementary material.
There are other books on the list. For example, The Soul of the Night by writer Chet Raymo. Through twenty essays on astronomy, the author analyzes the relationship between faith and rationalism. A ras del cielo, written by David Galadí-Enriquez, astronomer from Córdoba. This book, in addition to explaining nearby astronomy (atmosphere and blue sky, artificial satellites, moon, sun, etc. ), aims to bring the reader closer to space. Another attractive option is the book The planets by Daba Sobel, a collection of twelve essays on planets. According to a criticism published by Newsweek magazine, with this book the reader forgets that he is receiving a type of education because the book is a game. On the other hand, The Turtle and the Stars, by writer Arthur Upgren, helps us immerse ourselves in astronomy from the childhood memories of the author.
Astronomers from the Vizcaine Astronomy Association have also recommended fiction books: George's Secret Key to the Universe, written by Stephen Hawking and his daughter Lucy Hawking, to observe through the adventures of children the basics of astronomy, and Carl Sagan's novel Contact, the story of astronomers seeking intelligent life in the universe.
In addition, we have recommended three classic science fiction books: Arthur C. 2001 by Master Clark: A Space Odissey ( 2001: A Space Odyssey, Rendezvous with Rama and Gateway by writer Frederick Pohl. All three are the first books in a saga.
All these books disseminate astronomy, both popularization and fiction. That is why they are interesting from a scientific point of view. In the words of José Félix Rojas, "this research work does not leave us much time to read the disclosure", but thanks to the contributions of the whole team we have made a good recommendation.
