Elhuyar, once again, has made a clear commitment to the future and has just created the Internet science and technology portal that is being imposed day by day. The presentation took place on 25 May at the Science Museum of Miramón and it explained the contents offered by Zientzia.net. To see if you like.

The newly created science and technology portal is called Zientzia.net. You can find it at www.zientzia.net and help fill the gap that the Basque language still has in the new information technologies.

Zientzia.net is a space full of contents that, in addition to the latest scientific news, includes historical consultation information.

Every day you will find in Zientzia.net the main news of science and technology in the world.

On the one hand, the most interesting news selected by the Elhuyar team will be in Basque. With very varied and current topics, you will find what the latest research and innovations have brought in an understandable and enjoyable way.

In addition, the updated information offer is complete with links to the latest information provided by the websites in Spanish (English, Spanish and French) selected.

Dossiers

Zientzia.net wants to answer not only the daily news, but also the main topics that are often in mind. The mad cow or the history of space stations has been offered in a structured and understandable way so that science is not hindered in everyday life.

Every two weeks, dossiers will be made to improve the understanding of current affairs, explaining the basis, evolution and latest trends of the main topics.

The numbers of the magazine Elhuyar Zientzia eta Teknika can be consulted online. You are already available from 1998 and by the end of the year they will be available from 1995; you can already consult more than 2,300 articles from different scientific fields through the Internet.

Although you can also consult the short articles of the last two numbers, the information contained in the main articles will appear restricted for two months and for reading the only way will be the magazine published on paper.

As for presentation modes, each article can be consulted in two different ways:

• In PDF format. You can purchase the article keeping the look of the magazine. In this way you can print and save the documents with the same aspect as in the paper.
• In a special format easier to read for the internet. Paper formats are often not suitable for viewing by screen. We have given great importance to the user of the Internet to make a clean, practical and attractive use of information. We have defined an own design for the articles, with a readable and illustrated text.

For all the information available on Zientzia.net to be useful, it is necessary to have a good search system for this information and for this reason we have launched a powerful search engine.

The searcher indicates which documents you can find words from the same slogan of the word you are looking for (that is, without taking into account the decline of the same word). It is sufficient, therefore, to write the “genome” to find an article in which the ‘genomes’ contain ‘genome’ or any other variant.

In addition, the advanced search option is offered. In advanced search can be annotated by search date, author and/or theme.

In addition, the articles are classified by topics: Life Sciences, Space, Health, Earth Sciences, Computer Science, Technology, Environment and Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. In it you will find the possibility to satisfy the curiosity for each specific topic and various links of interest based on the ODP project used by the search engine Jakin.

Dictionary of the English dictionary

In Elhuyar we have another ambitious project: Encyclopedic Dictionary of Science and Technology. We want to make an encyclopedic dictionary of 25,000 illustrated concepts, which besides the definitions and articles in Basque, will also have tolls in Spanish (English, Spanish, French).

Given the breadth and interdisciplinarity of the scope of the Encyclopedic Dictionary of Science and Technology, the integration of concepts from the different disciplines related to it in a work requires a great work. For this reason, we have set a five-year limit on the project, but as the project is being developed it will always be consultable through the Internet. You can already consult 15.000 terms with basic definitions in Basque.

In addition to the above, you will find a series of sections that will give life to the website: the photography of the day with its corresponding explanation, the events agenda, fairs, conferences, etc. that will be given in Euskal Herria, the phrase and efeméride of the day, the possibility to ask questions about science and technology, the subscription system has given the week through email, are the options that Zientzia.net already has in progress.

In short, the Virtual Library will also be underway, the possibility of downloading books in Basque on science and technology for free.
