The historical transformation of the Basque fauna

The composition of the fauna of the different regions, biotopes or landscapes, the distribution of the different species and the study of the dynamics and changes that present or have suffered them are analyzed in zoogeography (Müller, 1974). However, within zoogography, from the classical point of view, there has been a great rigidity in the understanding and interpretation of animal communities. From the acceptance of the link and interaction of each community with the biotope that inhabits, an excessively strict understanding of concepts such as ecological balance and biocenotic balance has often been made. Consequently, the interpretation of fauna in specific regions has also been slightly limited, underestimating the extent, distribution and dynamism – or potential – of most living beings. 400
