Decisions and conclusions

Faced with the danger of extinction of the bear in the Pyrenees, about 17 years ago they decided to bring Slovenian bears. By then only five or six brown bears remained in the mountain range, so that the species would survive. Thus, three were brought from Slovenia at that time and another five, ten years later. This is expected to ensure survival.

But the effects of a decision are not always immediate or necessarily expected. In fact, not all the inhabitants of the Pyrenees supported the decisions of reproduction and expansion of the bear. They especially faced the shepherds, who for centuries have been enemies. Today, however, in some parts of the Pyrenees actions are accepted in favor of the bear. Where? To decide when, where and how these actions will be carried out, together with technicians and managers, in places where pastoralists have also participated, especially in Catalonia.

Decision-making among all has had notable consequences: where the population has been made, the rest has not. Today, in the Pyrenees, the bear can only endure if society so decides. This is what can be deduced from the evolution of the species to date, and from that evolution has been made known in the journal's central pages.

We have also discussed decisions and conclusions on other pages. For example, the decision to build an ice barrier at the Fukushima nuclear power plant. We have published a piece of news with expert criticism of this decision, according to which, despite the proper functioning of the ice barrier, it will not be enough to resolve the consequences of the disaster. They believe that other decisions would have to be made.

And decisions and conclusions are the core of the analysis. In this case, the issue is the future of the Garoña nuclear power plant, and renewable energy expert Aitor Urresti has analyzed the decisions made and not taken in recent months about the power plant and its possible consequences. However, the final decision has not yet been notified. Later on we will know what it is… and its consequences.
