The ESAC organization has measured the consumption of antibiotics in 27 European countries in the years 1997-2001. According to data, in the countries of northern Europe doctors prescribe fewer antibiotics than in the countries of the south, and are also more specific. The highest number of antibiotics is in France and the lowest in Holland.
The ESAC organization was born two years ago by the European Union to monitor the consumption of antibiotics. Antibiotic resistance developed by many bacteria is very worrying. Therefore, monitoring consumption is essential, since excessive consumption and incorrect consumption are the source of resistance.
