In Turkmenia, in the Asian desert of Kara Kum, the Soviet republic is dramatically decreasing the number of snakes. In this Soviet republic snakes are hunted to depoison and is one of the main sources of poison.
In the words of Ovez Sopyev, head of the Department of Herpetology at the Turkmenia Agricultural Institute: Snake venom is worth several times more than gold. One gram is enough to produce eleven tons of pharmaceuticals.
Snake catches in breeding areas in recent years have endangered their survival.
