Most geophysics agree that the main agent of the earth's magnetic field is the convection currents of cast iron in the earth's nucleus. In fact, it proposes that, besides the dipolar field, there is another field (quadropole) that is the one that leads the investment: when one weakens, the other strengthens the magnetic North pole becomes the magnetic South pole.
