To overcome school failure

The figures of school failure are increasingly terrifying among us. A recent survey reveals that students who fail to exceed the fourth year of Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO) are 31.9%, a really high figure. What can we do about such a situation? And better yet, is there anything that parents can do to keep these situations from happening?

Search for reasons

The first thing to do in this situation is to detect possible causes or causes that can affect the performance of our son or daughter.

Family atmosphere

The family environment is one of the factors that most influences the learning of young people. The attitude of the parents too hard or rigorous, the jealousy provoked by some younger brother, the lack of love, the distrust in their own abilities and abilities, etc. can be the causes of school failure.

In most cases, even if these factors have not actually occurred, if the child believes in them, the influence will be truthful. Therefore, the best thing in these cases is to talk to our children, put all the truth on the table, without any threat or punishment, to try to solve that situation so harmful to him. In other cases, however, it is necessary to have the collaboration of psychologists or specialized educators.

Lack of motivation

Making bad grades to our children doesn't mean they don't have the ability to learn. To illustrate some examples, Einstein was described as mental deficient in school, and the great writer Goethe did not exceed the minimums in spelling. When the young person is unmotivated, it is normal that he is not given levels in studies.

Faced with this situation, we should encourage you to work on a topic that really interests you, even if it is not among the school topics. It does not matter, in principle, whether the mythology is Greek or whether they are the musical groups you like the most. It is about awakening the interest of the young person and learning to use the academic methodology. This makes it easier for you to start learning things that are not so attractive to you. However, we may request the collaboration of the tutor or teacher.

Physical or psychological problems

They are not frequent but cannot be discarded beforehand, since sometimes low school performance (even if it does not fail) can be due to physiological causes such as auditory or visual problems, speech, dyslexia, etc. They are usually factors that affect younger children and that, once diagnosed, are overcome with special work or in support rooms.

When to repeat course

However, in some cases, when school failure is very evident, the possibility of children or young people repeating the course should be considered. The center itself or the tutor will tell us whether or not it is necessary to make this decision.

It is neither punishment nor defeat

Repeating a course should not be regarded as a punishment or a failure, but as an attempt at readaptation. It is a big mistake when it is clearly seen that the student does not give the level, at any price, try to exceed the level. We will only lengthen the situation and worsen the problem. If the right decision is not made, failure will become increasingly evident.

More security

The first years of a child are decisive for intellectual development.

Repeating a year is not a traumatic experience. To the extent that the child takes security in his studies and overcomes school failure, it will be easier to understand and verify that the decision made, the repetition, has been for the good.

Learning techniques

learn also

“I try, but I don’t get in,” “I don’t understand what the teacher explains,” “I don’t remember what I learned the day before.” Surely on more than one occasion we have heard these and other similar phrases by the mouth of our children. And they are no excuses.

Often, school failure can be the result of not properly assimilating concepts, as learning is also ‘learned’. Not everyone knows how to correctly memorize concepts, differentiate main and secondary ideas, summarize and organize topics, etc. There are students with their own skills to do all these jobs, but others, and most of them, will need help in performing these tasks. Therefore, in some centres this training has already begun. If you don't, don't worry because your child's tutor or teacher can help you.

What can parents do?

School failure is not something that appears overnight. And also, it is possible to anticipate this problem, taking appropriate measures from the beginning.

Early years of a child are decisive for intellectual development. It is important, therefore, to offer adequate stimuli, asking, supporting music, encouraging drawing, etc.

Give a good example What to see the child, learn it. That is why it is important that you also be interested in culture: recommending books, attending theaters or exhibitions…

Show interest in studies. Ask what book you are reading or help you collaborate with housework. Even if it's not too long, he'll thank you for spending a few minutes with him.

We parents always want the best for our children, but look! Don't get tired of extracurricular activities, special classes, etc. Risk of worse results.

Never make comparisons Every child has his size, not his brother.

Contact the teacher Talk over and over with him. Ask for advice and agree on the best strategy to follow. The Union gives strength.
