Before the end of the year we wanted to make a list with the most read contents of the magazine Elhuyar. We have prepared a list of ten with the most visited contents of the web. There is news about languages in the top spot on the list: "Despite forgetting the mother tongue, it stays in the brain." The news includes an experiment with Chinese children adopted by French speakers, in which Canadian researchers demonstrated that, despite forgetting the mother tongue, the brain continues to respond to it. Below you will find the complete list of the most read contents of 2014.

Of the contents published this year in the journal Elhuyar, the ten most read have been:

1. Although the mother tongue is forgotten, it remains in the brain

2.Debate on fracking or hydraulic fracture

3.Magic and limits of machine translation

4th A Paleolithic treasure is found in a cave of Gipuzkoa

5.Platonic balls

6. Is excellence in science possible without equality?

7.Xabier Erkizia, sound researcher: "It is surprising how much research has been done on sound and little listening"

8. The appearance of a footprint that confirms inflation in the origin of the universe has caused a bewilderment

9. Neanderthals find an image that would show they had an abstract thought

10.The question of sugar

Given the most read news, it can be said that readers of Elhuyar magazine have had this year two favorite topics: the first is the language and the second is the ancestors. In fact, a story published in November has been the most read this year. It is news that speaks of the mother tongue. Then the third language appears, in this case associated with machine translation. News related to human ancestors ranked 4th and 9th on the decimal list. Both are the only themes that are repeated.

Finally, another topic that has attracted great interest has been fracking or hydraulic fracture. The roundtable on the topic was published by Elhuyar in the April issue and the report has expanded significantly. It has been the second of the ten most read contents, reflecting the concern that awakens the issue in Basque society.

According to the usual phrase of Pedro Miguel Etxenike, we will not try to predict 2015 because it is difficult to predict, especially the future. Therefore, we will only predict what is certain: that through science we will continue to make new discoveries to better know the world and ourselves.
