Calamares usually deposit them in the bottom of the sea after sunset. However, they have discovered that the squid of Gonatus onys carries them in their tentacles to protect them.

The species of squid Gonatus onys is common in the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, but it was never seen that it carried a group of eggs. For predators, squid is even more prized if it carries eggs, so they descend to great depths where there are fewer predators.

Brad Seibel and his University of Rhode Island team have caught Gonatus onys protecting the bag of eggs -- they saw five squid with two or three thousand eggs each. For this purpose, they used a remote controlled submarine.
