This year, the Norwegian Academy of Sciences and Literature will award the Abel prize to researcher Srinivasa Varadhan for his contributions to probability theory. Above all, the elaboration of a joint theory of great deviations stands out. Therefore, you will receive 755,000 euros at the event to be held on 22 May in Oslo.

Varadhan was born in India, Madrid, and has worked in New York since 1963. He is currently a researcher at the University of New York and has received other important awards for his work.

According to the Academy, the theory of the great deviations of Varadhan offers a unified and unique method to understand many of the phenomena that occur in stochastic systems. These stochastic systems arise in fields such as quantum theory, statistical physics, dynamic demography or traffic engineering.
