Robotics looks at nature

The march of insects, spiders, crabs and lobsters can contribute to the development of the next generation of robots. Two engineers and an entomologist from the University of Oregon study these animals to design new mobile machines.

Arthropods have been facing the environment for millions of years and have developed very suitable structures. Their legs are not all equal mechanically. Some can be used to manipulate when they are not necessary for body restraint. They can also be associated with a surface in different ways.

According to researchers, spiders can teach many things to robot designers who must move smoothly and accurately. By analyzing the arthropods that live in cracks, the machines that can perform the study of the walls of nuclear reactors can be better designed.
