More effective surgical procedure against respiratory tumors

The operation, carried out by
Jamie Koufman, consists of the removal of papillomas at a medical center in North Carolina (USA). ), with the aim of obtaining better results in patients and using them in the future against laryngeal cancer. The new technology used consists of combining two types of laser: the CO2 laser and the pulsed laser coloring. The first removes tumors from the larynx and trachea and the second affects the base on which the tumor has occurred to prevent its regeneration. The two lasers were conducted using high-definition videoendoscope and the instruments were inserted through the nose through tubes.

So far, this type of surgery must be performed in the operating room. In addition, the intervention is performed under general anesthesia, being frequent that the patient spend the night in the hospital. The new surgical procedure, on the other hand, allows it to be performed in the own medical surgery consultation, as it is done with the patient fully awake and once completed can be returned home.

According to Koufman, the same method can be applied in 50-70% of laryngeal surgeries, such as the extraction of vocal nodules, polyps, cysts and granulomas, and other vascular lesions. In addition, it hopes to be able to use it in the future against laryngeal cancer.
