Japan seeks to break the speed mark

To date the French High Speed Train has reached the world's highest speed on the railway (515.3 km/h), but in Japan Central Japan Railways is about to break this mark. The magnetic suspension train is being prepared to reach a speed of 550 km/h in 1996. The tests are being carried out on a special railway line 43 kilometers long west of Tokyo. The new train is scheduled to open in 1998 and will normally travel 500 kilometers per hour.
