Following the Salmon
For some time many trips have been researched that climb the salmon to the river. At the end of this journey the eggs are laid and die to close the biological cycle. But in that cycle young salmon travel to the sea and that has not been investigated so much. After entering the high seas, where are the salmon going?
Following salmon is not easy, among other things because transmitter radios that are used in freshwater do not work well in salt water. Canadian researchers have now used an alternative transmitter that emits sound waves and can be used in both saltwater and sweet water (making it ideal for following a salmon). Through these transmitters, researchers have clarified the routes of young salmon.
On the other hand, in order to recover salmon populations in the North Atlantic, Greenland fishermen and the North Atlantic Salmon Fund have signed an agreement to prevent the capture of these fish for five years.
