‘Storytelling’ dies

G. Roa bridge

In January we published in the magazine Elhuyar Zientzia eta Teknika the news of the presence of Stephen Jay Gould in Euskal Herria. The I Scientific Prose organized by the Association of Basque Writers in December 2001. He participated in the congress and we had the opportunity to chat with him. Now, five months later, we have to warn of his death.

He died at age 60 from cancer diagnosed at age 40, more specifically from abdominal mesothelioma. He also researched this disease and knew it is incurable. And that most people die within eight months of the diagnosis of the disease. But as he said, “every evolutionary biologist knows that variation is an immutable background of nature, and I get into that variation.”
