Automatic guide

One day we are 100 km/h at the wheel of our car. Can we read Zientzia eta Teknika magazine?

That's what you can think of if you look at the recent experiment conducted in San Diego, California.

For four days, 26 vehicles (cars, buses and trucks) have traveled 15,000 kilometers on a special stretch of the highway. When arriving at the motorway area, decorated with special systems, we must tell the car computer where we want to go and then we can leave the steering wheel and pedals quiet.

The car has a radar and magnetic receivers on the front and back. Magnetic markers placed in the center of the road and nails 2.5 cm. diameter and 10 cm. length indicate to the car computer the exact location and the car moves in the same way as the train. On the other hand, through mobile phone antennas you can know the exact location of the other vehicles, thus avoiding shocks.

Driving with this technology can be more comfortable and safe, but it will also increase traffic. In fact, this system will reduce the safety distance between vehicles and increase the speed to 190
km/h.
