According to a report by the European Mental Health Organization, European health systems are undermining the human rights of patients with mental illness. The report collects the testimonies of the ex-patients of the psychiatric services and the facts they have considered common are mandatory hospitalization, electroconpulsive therapy, the treatments implemented in force, some of them with severe side effects, with them, physical and emotional pain, lack of information and legal support, lack of basic attention, stigma and social and physical isolation.

Although some progress has been made in recent years, the XXI has still occurred. The authors of the report described as embarrassing the violation of these human rights in the 19th century and stressed the need to review and modify psychiatric practices. They also point out that it is essential to listen to those who have been forced to receive treatment in this reflection.
