Russian physicist Eugene Chulkov will receive the 2018 Euskadi Research Award, as announced by the Basque Government. Chulkov has been a professor in the Department of Materials Physics at UPV-EHU since 2003 and a researcher at the Materials Physics Center and the Donostia International Physics Center (DIPC). The court has noted that it has made significant contributions in the field of condensed matter physics, especially in solid state physics and surface physics.

In addition to the scientific contributions, the jury highlighted its way of doing science: creating school. They stressed that in their environment has been able to create and group a significant core of researchers, more than fifty leading researchers from around the world. Thus, since their arrival in the Basque Country, they have wanted to contribute to the implementation of the DIPC and confess it as a pole of attraction for the talent of excellence.
