The Ikerlan technology centre participates in the European project Flame Sofc. Its objective is to develop an appliance for electricity and heat generation.
Flame Sofc is based on fuel cells. In them the generation of heat and electricity is more direct, which results in an improvement of efficiency. Fuel cells generate electricity and heat through an electrochemical process. These batteries, unlike conventional batteries, are not exhausted. Traditional batteries store the necessary fuel inside, so once finished they cannot continue to operate. However, fuel cells receive fuel from the outside and therefore have endless durability while containing fuel.
In addition to higher efficiency, the system is less aggressive with the environment. On the other hand, appliances will be quieter and more reliable.
These appliances will be used first in homes, as the goal is that homes or buildings have the ability to generate heat and electricity from natural gas, butane, propane or diesel.
