In patients with schizophrenia, one characteristic is the hyperactivity of 5-HT2A receptors -serotonin neurotransmitter receptors. An international team of UPV researchers has found in an investigation published in the journal Nature that the 5-HT2A receptor is closely related to another receptor: mGluR2. They have shown that the two receptors form dimers in neurons, which interact negatively with each other. Thus, drugs that stimulate the mGlu2 receptor could act as antipsychotic 5-HT2A receptor inhibitors.
