Prepared laser system without loss of energy

Sandia laboratory engineers have built a two-dimensional artificial glass capable of carrying light. The glass called "2D photonic crystal", is made of gallium arsenide and designed to conduct infrared rays with a very low energy loss.

The research has been done thinking of lasers, since most of the energy consumed by lasers is used to compensate for the loss of the process. The photonic crystal will reduce energy consumption during the commissioning of a laser system and improve the performance of optical communications and future photoonic computers.
