According to a study on the island of Ascension, in the South Atlantic, the population of green turtle is recovering there and is no longer in danger. This has sparked debate over whether it is better to classify endangered populations than the species itself.
The green turtle (Chelonia mydas), like the other sea turtles, is part of the list of endangered species, the World Conservation Commission. This does not reflect the real situation, since in the island of Ascension the population has increased much in recent decades and it seems that something similar has happened with many other populations of Brazil and the Caribbean.
Some believe that aid would be better channeled if only endangered populations appeared on the list.
