Nanothermometers for measuring heat

A team of Japanese researchers has developed a nanothermometer capable of measuring temperatures between 323 and 823 kelvin. Its diameter is 150 nanometers, which allows its use for measurements at the micrometer and nanometer level.

It has two main advantages: it is able to measure high temperatures and does not have to work vacuum, such as previous nanothermometers. The basic components of this thermometer are a carbon nanotube and a gallium that works very similar to conventional mercury thermometers. As the temperature increases, the gallium rises in the nanotube.
