Kiribati is a small Pacific state. It is only an island, but has been declared the largest marine protected area in the world: PIPA (Phoenix Islands Protected Area). The area has an area of 410,500 square kilometers, almost the sum of Italy, Switzerland and Austria. Inside it has eight coral atolls and two reef systems.
