Fish also generate carbonate

Fish also generate carbonate
01/02/2009 | Elhuyar

Plankton is not the only way of life that produces calcium carbonate. Bone fish were also known to produce carbonate in the intestine, but were supposedly small amounts, a fact that never entered the calculations of the carbon cycle of the sea. Now, a team of physiologists from Exeter University has found that the amount of carbonate in fish is high and important in calculating carbon cycles. According to physiologists, the contribution of fish is 3 to 15% of marine carbonate.
