New possibilities for antibiotic generation

The genome of the fungus Streptomyces coelicolor has been discovered in Britain. Fungi in the Streptomyces family produce two-thirds of the antibiotics currently used.

Scientists have found that pathogenic bacteria are increasingly resistant to antibiotics and believe that this genome can be a very useful tool to create more efficient antibiotics.
