Researchers from Africa and Europe have presented the PROTA project in Kenya. Between 2003-2012, the characteristics of 7,000 useful plant species in Tropical Africa will be analyzed, which will be collected on a website and in different CDs and publications. All this information is intended to promote the sustainable use of this resource, as well as the conservation of biodiversity and rural development.
The estimated total cost of the project amounts to 16 million euros (1.6 million per year) and the expenses of the first year will be borne between the European Union and the Wagening University of Holland and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The project will be coordinated by the World Institute for Agriculture and Forestry (Kenya).
