Tomorrow, yesterday, today

In view of artificial intelligence and machine learning, it is no wonder that in this same century machines as intelligent as human ones are achieved. There are already autonomous vehicles, drones, machines capable of learning, robots to help the elderly and the disabled… Thus, we can imagine a society in which robots and humans coexist easily. We have to be prepared.

They are increasingly able to learn and we have to decide what autonomy we want to give them. It is not easy to decide where to set the limit. And if the previous limitations are very strict, perhaps we are stopping their possible development. With researchers working on artificial intelligence, we wanted to reflect on this issue that is boiling.

But, as we want to reflect on the future of our society, we also look at the aspects that have allowed us to reach this point. On this occasion, a key factor in the evolution of our species: fire. There is still something to clarify: who lit the first fire? Homo erectus already used fire every day, but who managed to create fire? Were we, or the fire the Neanderthals had achieved before? Neanderthals have awakened the fire of discussion, at least, because the debate over their capabilities remains brutal.

On the other hand, as every year, in May the CAF-Elhuyar awards have been awarded and we have brought the winning articles. We want to take the opportunity to congratulate all the participants and, especially, M. Prize of Merito de Elhuyar. The mathematician Jesus Esteban Galarza. Thank you M. Jesus, being a pioneer in the use of Basque in times when mathematics was not done in Basque.
