In France, the Orsay Institute of Nuclear Physics uses a special cycle called “Agor”. Being made of superreroales, its size is very small: Only 4.4 meters in diameter and 3.6 meters in height. Although it has only one megawatt power, as no one in the world accelerates all kinds of ions, from the light hydrogen ion to the heavy uranium ion. In fact, superconductor coils cooled to -269ºC generate a magnetic field of intensity 4 teslas.
This cyclotron, which is currently working in France, will soon be installed at the Kernfysisch Versneller Institute in Groningen, Holland, for its small size.
