Cell division and cancer

A group of Swiss researchers study the particular behavior of cancer cells in yeast.

Some cancer cells have an excess of chromosomes. The origin of the phenomenon is the ill-performed cell division. The stem cell is divided into two different size cells. Scientists investigating cancer at the Swiss Institute find in yeast a gene encoded with the so-called protein division.

These proteins are stored in the form of rings so that the amount of chromosomes is the same as in the two cells their division. When there is no ring seen in the image below, yeast only produces abnormal cells.
