SEM ratifies vaccine efficacy and the importance of booster dose
The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has confirmed the effectiveness of vaccines in a context where the Omicron variant is causing the greatest unknowns in Europe. He points out that both laboratory and real-world data show great protection against serious illness and hospitalization. In particular, in South Africa they achieved 70% protection with 2 doses and in the UK 90% with two additional booster doses.
He also warned that the wave created by Omicron can cause great damage and should not be underestimated, although the symptoms, in many cases, are not as severe as those caused by the delta variant (which dominated until reaching Omicro).
It calls for the completion of the vaccination and anticipates that the application for a booster dose has been received for young people aged 16 to 17 and is under consideration. Moreover, they expect that 15-12 will also receive the same request.
In children, it is being observed that COVID 19 can cause serious cases, including hospital admissions and deaths. The EMS confirms that vaccines are effective in preventing these cases. Also in the case of pregnant women, unvaccinated people are at greater risk of serious illness than vaccinated women, and claim that vaccines do not have adverse effects during pregnancy or childbirth.
On the other hand, Omicron has explained that he has a great capacity to reinfect and infect those who are inserted. In the latter, he explains that the infection can function as a booster dose, that is, that omicron infection would strengthen the immunity administered by vaccines. Given the incence that exists at the moment, he has announced that it can be of great help to move faster to the endemic phase, but has made it clear that we are still in the pandemic.
