VI edition of the works “Esperanza bioartificial” published by the journal Elhuyar. Tecnalia has been awarded the Journalism Award in the Internet category at the awards ceremony held this afternoon at the Miramón Technology Park. Twice as many reports were published in the April 2012 issue, and its author is Guillermo Roa Zubia.
The jury highlighted the “use of multimedia information” made by the bipartite for the award, and said that “the author has done an excellent job to better understand the capacity, hope and reality of transplant organs as measured from stem cells”.
Despite the award given to a specific work, Elhuyar magazine also recognizes its work on the web. In fact, in the spring of 2012 there was a commitment to disseminate and complete information on the Internet through media not available on paper.
Two reports complete the work “La esperanza bioartificial”. The first speaks of stem cells and from them Roa asks where we are on the road to the creation of organs and tissues to measure. The report opens with the transplant of a trachea, produced by the growth of stem cells on a synthetic structure, through two of its main protagonists: the trachea receptor and one of its founders. In his second report, the author focuses on totally artificial organs and tissues.
Roa believes it is a slippery issue and therefore difficult to divulge. “On the one hand, you have to get a balance by talking about the benefits of stem cells,” he says. They have amazing applications [stem cells], but also great limitations, and no applications or limits are yet fully known. Be cautious, because research is still in the first steps. But on the other hand, that prudent account has to be attractive.”Doctor of Chemistry, Roa has twelve years of experience in science communication and since he began working in Elhuyar he has worked in the magazine Elhuyar Zientzia eta Teknologia. Roa is one of the team's most veteran editors. In “La esperanza bioartificial”, in addition to the text, the image disseminated by the report is proper. In addition to this image, he has prepared other images for new reports of the magazine through the animation program Blender. Roa is “very satisfied” with the award: “Personally it is exciting and from the point of view of the magazine team it is also very rewarding to know that our work is valued well.”
