The professor and researcher of the UPV-EHU Raúl Ibáñez has been the winner of the 2011 COSCE Prize for Scientific Dissemination awarded by the Spanish Confederation of Scientific Associations (COSCE). Ibáñez is a member of the Raising Public Awareness of Mathematics of the European Mathematical Society (EMS), organizer of the outreach committee of the Royal Spanish Mathematical Society (RSME) and director of the DivulgaMAT website.

Ibáñez has spent more than seven years working to spread mathematics, geometry and topology as part of culture. This trajectory has given him other prizes, such as José María Savirón 2010. "Very happy and proud" with the award received by Ibáñez, has claimed the "need and responsibility" of scientists and especially the university to disseminate their research, "because it is very important that people understand what our work is for."

According to Ibañez, dissemination remains a pending subject for scientists and societies. "Until recently it was not very well seen to say that you worked on the dissemination of mathematics, especially among mathematicians; we were immersed in our research and teaching. But all this is changing," he says. However, Ibáñez points out that, in addition to scientists, society also has much to say on this subject: "Society must open up and strive to understand the importance of scientific outreach. He has to try to approach science."
