The Malaspina 2010 expedition has just left Cadiz. This is a multidisciplinary project led by the Spanish Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC). Its main objectives are to assess the impact of climate change on the ocean and analyze biodiversity.
Samples will be collected in different areas of the oceans around the world, from the surface to 5,000 meters deep. With all the samples collected and the information and images of the evolution of the expedition will complete the Malaspina 2010 collection. According to those responsible for the expedition, it is a kind of "time capsule", so that future research on the evolution of the oceans have a reliable reference.
Together with researchers from AZTI-Tecnalia and UPV/EHU, groups of the most prestigious institutions at the international level, such as NASA, the European Space Agency and the universities of California, Rio de Janeiro, Washington and Vienna, will participate.
