What gives cohesion to muscles, bristles and skin is collagen and so far it was thought that this protein was only present in animals. The fungus Microbotryum violaceum, however, has shown that beliefs were corrupt. The cell of this plant parasite with flowers is surrounded by tubes called fimbrijas. Many other fungi have that structure and scientists don't know why.
However, a group of Canadian researchers is surprised when they discover that the main protein these tubes form is collagen, which is the first time it is found outside animals.
Thanks to this fact, the theory has been reinforced that during evolution humans and fungi separated later than plants.
