Linux Mandrake 8.2 in Basque

The project has been developed by the Basque Government and has been translated by Elhuyar and UZEI. Well, the Basque version of Linux Mandrake 8.2 is available to users.

Given the increasing spread of this operating system, the Basque Government decided to translate into Basque. The requirement was to have a unified translation, and to give in Basque the most important parts of the basic operating system, and it has been prepared by Elhuyar and UZEI, as they did before with Windows.

Own culture

Linus Torvalds is the creator of the Linux operating system. In 1991, the student of the University of Helsinki worked as a project to start this new operating system that has been developed through the Internet thanks to the support of volunteers.

The effectiveness of Linux, on the one hand, and its stability, on the other, have been mentioned many times to explain the success of this system. But not only that: Linux has the ability to work on different hardware, unlike other operating systems.

For many, however, this is not the only basis for Linux success. The Linux world has its own philosophy and culture. Linux has created a new computer concept: free software.

Basque version of Linux

The translated version has been Linux Mandrake 8.2, the Gnome desktop has been selected and the Mozilla 0.9.8 browser and the Evolution 1.0 mail application have been translated into Basque. All this is available online for anyone who wants to download it.

The distribution of Mandrake will include the version in Basque, but the Basque Government will edit around this month 2,000 CDs for distribution mainly in schools. In these CDs, in addition to the Basque version of Mandrake, there will be explanatory manuals on how to use them.
