Last February, Internet 2 was launched, a new communications network that will join 140 US universities. Internet 2 is based on a network that will use the new fiber optic.
This new type of fibers has been created by the UCAID business association, with the collaboration of Qwest, Nortel and Cisco. The network can transport 2.4 gigabits per second, 85,000 times more than in current connections. Internet 2 will develop high-performance applications for subsequent transfer to the public network.
