European Commission for Water Cleaning

M. ESTONBA

The European Commission has proposed a list of 32 substances to be phased out of water. With this proposal, the Commission aims to protect rivers, lakes and marine waters from hazardous substances and progressively eliminate certain dangerous products. All these substances will be analysed before 2003 and subsequently measures will be taken for disposal in the aquatic environment.

According to the list, 11 of these substances are hazardous and have elimination priority (lead, certain phytosanitary products, etc.) and 11 more have study priority. However, no evidence has yet been found to determine whether the other 10 substances are toxic, persistent, or bioaccumulative.
