Russia will be left without contraception soon, according to local health institutions. Due to the weakness of the ruble, in recent years no contraceptives have been imported by the west and two condom companies with Italian license have had to close, no matter the latex. The only factory that manufactured diaphragm contraceptives throughout the state has had to close by offering a product of poor quality.
Lack of contraception is a serious problem for Russian women who want to plan for their family. Every year, Russia has four million abortions, twice as many births. Many women abort illegally and also in painful hygienic conditions. However, abortions in hospitals are not performed in much better conditions: equipment is obsolete and lack of anesthesiologists and antibiotics. Postabortion or birth infection is very common.
The Government has organized a five-year planning for the opening of family planning centers. However, the weakness of the coin and the shortage of contraceptives and specialists can send planning to pianos. In addition, in this economic crisis, family planning is far behind the government's priorities.
The government is concerned about the reduction of birth, since some hospitals have indicated that the birth rate has been placed less than half. There are women who say that the political and economic situation is the main cause of the absence of children. But another reason is the sterility caused by the frequency of abortion.
Last January, the Minister of Health, Inge Grebesheva, Pediatrician of the Department of Attention to Children, has just created the Russian Association of Family Planning and hopes that in the coming months this organization will spread to the whole state. This institution will focus its efforts on education and its first job will be the training of teachers in sexual education.
