Heavier element

A group of Soviet scientists claim that it has isolated the heaviest chemical element. The atomic number of this new element is 110.

The team led by Juri Oganesian has held two sessions. In one of them, 40 argonas, with 18 protons, have bombed 236 uranium-236 with 92 protons. In the other, 40 calcium with 20 protons has been bombarded with a thorium of 90 protons. According to Soviet scientists, the one obtained after fission is an element of 110 protons. This means a live average of 9 milliseconds.

This claim has not been fully accepted among all scientists working in the same field. From the Soviet attempts by many there is not enough data to say that a new element has been synthesized.

The interest after the creation of new heavy elements is: Elements above 114 protons are considered to be sufficiently stable.
